Garlic Butter Rice is a flavorful and easy-to-make side dish featuring long grain white or jasmine rice cooked in savory chicken broth with sautéed onions, garlic, and rich butter. It’s perfect to accompany a variety of main courses and adds a comforting, buttery aroma to your meal.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups dry long grain white rice, or jasmine rice, rinsed in a fine sieve and drained well
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped yellow onion
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic (or up to 2 Tbsp)
  • 2 1/2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 4 Tbsp unsalted butter, cut into 1 Tbsp pieces, divided
  • 1 Tbsp minced fresh parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. Melt Butter: Melt 1 Tbsp butter in a large saucepan over medium heat until fully melted and warm for sautéing.
  2. Sauté Onions and Garlic: Add the finely chopped yellow onion and sauté for about 3 minutes until they start to deepen in color. Then add the minced garlic and cook for about 1 minute until just beginning to color but not browned.
  3. Add Broth and Season: Pour in the chicken broth, season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to your taste, and bring the mixture to a boil.
  4. Cook Rice: Add the rinsed rice and stir once to distribute. Cover with a snug lid, reduce heat to low, and let simmer for about 18 minutes until the liquid is fully absorbed.
  5. Rest Rice: Remove the pot from heat and let the rice rest for 10 minutes, covered to finish steaming and develop fluffy texture.
  6. Add Butter and Fluff: Stir in the remaining 3 Tbsp butter, toss the rice gently, and fluff with a fork to incorporate the butter evenly.
  7. Serve: Serve the garlic butter rice warm garnished with minced fresh parsley if desired for a touch of color and freshness.

Notes

  • Rinsing the rice removes excess starch and helps produce fluffy, non-sticky grains.
  • Using low-sodium chicken broth allows you to control the salt level better.
  • Adjust garlic amount according to your preference for stronger or milder garlic flavor.
  • If you prefer a vegetarian version, substitute chicken broth with vegetable broth.
  • Letting the rice rest after cooking is key to achieving the perfect texture.
  • Fresh parsley garnish adds freshness and color but is optional.
