Delight in these charming Snowflake Cookies, perfectly crisp and subtly sweet with a hint of almond. Ideal for festive occasions or winter celebrations, these cookies feature a tender texture and are beautifully dusted with powdered sugar for a snowy effect.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp almond extract (optional)

For Decorating

  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt until evenly combined.
  3. Cream butter and sugar: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar together using a mixer until the mixture is light, fluffy, and creamy.
  4. Add wet ingredients: Incorporate the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using) into the butter-sugar mixture, beating until smooth and fully blended.
  5. Combine dry and wet: Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet mixture, stirring until a soft dough forms. Avoid overmixing to keep the cookies tender.
  6. Roll out dough: On a floured surface, roll the dough out to about 1/4-inch thickness to ensure even baking and the proper cookie thickness.
  7. Cut cookie shapes: Use a snowflake-shaped cookie cutter to cut out cookies, and carefully place them on the prepared baking sheets, spacing them slightly apart.
  8. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes or until the edges turn lightly golden. Baking time may slightly vary depending on oven performance.
  9. Cool and decorate: Allow the cookies to cool completely on a wire rack. Once cooled, dust with powdered sugar for a snowy look or decorate with royal icing for more intricate designs.

Notes

  • To enhance flavor, you may substitute almond extract with lemon or orange zest.
  • Ensure butter is softened but not melted to achieve the right dough consistency.
  • Chill the dough for 30 minutes before rolling if it's too sticky for easier handling.
  • Store cookies in an airtight container to maintain freshness and prevent them from becoming soft.
  • For gluten-free variation, substitute all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend scaled 1:1.
