Ingredients

Cookies

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 12 tbsp butter softened
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup full fat sour cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • Food coloring (optional)

Frosting

  • 12 tbsp butter softened
  • 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1-2 tbsp milk or cream
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Sprinkles for garnish

Instructions

  1. Cream Sugar and Butter: Cream the sugar and butter together with an electric mixer until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  2. Add Wet Ingredients: Add the eggs, sour cream and vanilla extract to the butter mixture and mix well to combine. Add food coloring if desired; color will lighten when dry ingredients are added.
  3. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, combine all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Then add this dry mixture to the wet ingredients and mix thoroughly.
  4. Chill Dough: Transfer the dough to an airtight container and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. The dough will be soft and sticky.
  5. Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheets: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
  6. Shape Cookies: Remove dough from refrigerator. Using a cookie scoop, form dough balls about the size of a golf ball. If sticky, dust hands with flour. Place dough balls at least 2 inches apart on baking sheets and gently press down to slightly flatten.
  7. Bake Cookies: Bake for 12 minutes until cookies puff and edges just start to brown. Remove from oven and transfer baking sheets to wire racks. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for at least 10 minutes.
  8. Prepare Frosting: Cream butter and powdered sugar with an electric mixer until light and fluffy (2-3 minutes). Mix in vanilla. If frosting is too stiff, add milk or cream 1 tablespoon at a time until desired consistency is reached. Add food coloring and mix until uniform color.
  9. Frost Cookies: Frost cookies with a piping bag or offset spatula. Garnish with sprinkles immediately after frosting.
  10. Serving Note: Since frosting does not firm up completely, avoid stacking cookies to prevent damage.

Notes

  • Chill dough for at least 1 hour to make it easier to handle and to improve cookie texture.
  • If dough is too sticky when shaping, dust hands with flour to prevent sticking.
  • Use parchment paper or silicone mats to prevent cookies from sticking to baking sheets.
  • For vibrant frosting colors, add food coloring gradually until desired shade is achieved.
  • The frosting remains soft, so store cookies in a single layer to avoid smudging.
  • Allow cookies to cool fully on the baking sheet before frosting to prevent melting.
